Canine in the Surgery Center?

Canine in the Surgery Center?

Allow us to introduce our "Pet Volunteers", Gypsy and Hershey. St. Lucie Surgery Center started this program in 2003 as a means of bringing animal-assisted therapy to the employees and visitors of the Center. Animal Therapy is well documented as providing benefits to people in many ways, including stress reduction, improving self-esteem, creating bonds between individuals as communication skills improve and healing through positive thinking.

Prior to initiating the program, guidance was sought at the State level regarding regulations to follow. Approval was also obtained from the Center's Infection Control Consultant. Our policy was then developed based on their requirements and includes that the dogs be vaccinated, free of any diseases and in good health, licensed, under control and well behaved. All clinical areas and kitchens are strictly off limits, which means that they are allowed in the business office and lobby areas.

Since we want to respect the wishes of non-dog lovers and dog-lovers alike, please let the receptionist know if you want to see the dog and we will introduce you.  Likewise, if for any reason you want to avoid the dog (allergies, not liking or being afraid of dogs, etc.), please let the receptionist know and we will take extra care to isolate the animal from you.

Our Pet Volunteers are usually here on Fridays, and if you would care to meet them, please let the Receptionist know. So, if you hear an occasional bark, it is not your imagination. Yes, there is a dog in the surgery center!

Pet Volunteer Program Policy G-II-f-75 and Letter of Guidance from the State of Florida / Bureau of Health Facility Regulation / Division of Health Quality Assurance is available upon request.
